This is the second solo exhibition at this museum by Yoshitomo Nara (1959-), an internationally active artist born in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. This exhibition, which will be held approximately 10 years after the previous "You and I Are a Little Like" exhibition (2012-13), looks back on the artist's activities over the approximately 12 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake up to the present day. A number of outstanding works dating back to his student days will also be on display.
The title ``The Beginning Place'' suggests Nara's ``homeland'' as the ``place of beginning'' of creation, and at the same time it is a reference to Nara's works. It means the "place of beginning" created by encounters. From the exhibition space, which weaves old and recent works as if moving back and forth between the past and present, to the scenery of Nara's hometown outside the museum, the experience through this exhibition will provide visitors with a sense of hope. I sincerely hope that it will become a place of beginnings.
This is a unique project unique to our museum, which has been collecting Yoshitomo Nara's works since the 1990s and boasts the world's largest collection of works, and will be held in a single building.
