~Iwami Kagura~

"Kagura" is a dance that was performed as an offering to the gods in Japanese Shinto rituals, and its origins are said to date back to the "Amanoiwato Legend" in Japanese mythology.

Its origins are ancient, and it is said to have originated from a Dengaku-style event that took place in the Iwami region of Shimane Prefecture from the end of the Heian period to the Muromachi period, where villagers worshipped the village god "Omotogami" as a kind of agricultural deity.

When the law was revised in the Meiji period, local people began to perform Kagura, and in addition to the traditional six-beat rhythm, the tempo was changed to a heroic eight-beat tempo that reflects the lively temperament of the Iwami people, and reforms became more active. Currently, there are over 30 types of performances, including those based on the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, and the scale is large.

Although it is a "religious ritual," it is highly entertaining and has a clear story. The dance and music are intense, refreshing and heroic, and you can enjoy it just by watching it. It continues to be loved by local residents and has been well received in performances outside the prefecture and overseas.

On May 20, 2019, it was registered as a Japanese Heritage site as "The Mythical World of Gods and Demons - Kagura Traditions in the Iwami Region".

In Masuda City, May 20 is designated as "Iwami Kagura Day", and the week before and after is designated as "Iwami Kagura Week", with various activities such as "child watch activities" and "Iwami Kagura Walks".

~Masuda City Iwami Kagura Shinwakai~

Masuda City Iwami Kagura Shinwakai was established in 1982 as "Masuda City Iwami Kagura Mutual Aid Association" by nine organizations in Masuda City before the merger of municipalities. In order to foster children's Kagura troupes and pass on the traditional culture of the Masuda region, the group has been working to create a Kagura village by performing at the local autumn festival and both within and outside the city.

In 1992, the group changed its name to "Masuda City Iwami Kagura Shinwa Association," and currently consists of 11 groups within Masuda City, working to preserve, pass on, and develop Iwami Kagura, the traditional culture that represents Masuda City.

In recent years, the group has successfully performed not only in Japan but also overseas, and is promoting Iwami Kagura to the world.
