Sumida River, "the edge of death" and the direction of a child actor
It is said that no other Noh play can bring as many tears as Sumida River, but this time I would like to focus on Motomasa's words in the play, "the edge of death".
Death comes to everyone equally, and those who must accept it, and the difficulties of living. A mother who is cruelly informed of her son's death while on a journey searching for him finally catches a glimpse of the child actor's figure, but will she be saved by this, or will she fall even deeper into the valley of despair? I myself felt on stage, even as a child performing as a child actor, that the audience projected various thoughts onto this scene.
Umewakamaru, who was lured by a human trafficker and fell ill on his journey down to the eastern provinces, was a 12-year-old boy, and we can see from the waki's narration in the boat that his conversation with the adults at the end was quite solid. However, the effect of the direction is enhanced by deliberately featuring a child actor who is seven or eight years old.
In the discussion of Sarugaku, it seems that the composer Juro Motomasa and his father Zeami had different opinions about the necessity of the child actors, but this time we will leave it up to the sensibilities of the audience to see the child actors as envisioned by Zeami, and will perform the play without the child actors.
I would like to perform the play while projecting "The Edge of Death" onto my own way of life.
