Noh play Love Heavy Load by Katayama Kuroemon
Tatsuta
A traveling monk who has traveled around the country comes to the Tatsuta River in Yamato Province. A shrine maiden appears and guides the monk to a sacred tree that is in full autumn color among the winter-withered trees, and reveals that she is the deity Tatsutahimegami, before disappearing into the palace.
When Tatsutahimegami appears in a divine form, she admires the beauty of the autumn leaves on Mount Tatsuta and performs a night kagura dance...
This Noh play is full of emotion and depicts the world of waka poetry and the Age of the Gods, with the sacred tree filled with colorful autumn leaves as its symbol.
Chrysanthemum Flower
When Tarokaja, out sightseeing in the capital, walks down the street with a chrysanthemum flower in his hair, a beautiful lady who sees him composes a poem. In response, the lady takes a liking to him because of the elegant poem he writes in reply, and is invited to a banquet in Gion, but...
Love's Heavy Burden
Upon hearing that Yamashina Shoji, an old man who guards the chrysanthemums, is secretly in love with the Empress, a vassal of Emperor Shirakawa summons him. He is told that if he carries this burden and walks around the garden a hundred times, a thousand times, the Empress will appear. However, Shoji is unable to lift the heavy burden, and in despair, he rages and dies of rage against the Empress.
Soon, the ghost of Shoji appears, and he expresses his resentment at the Empress for toying with his unrequited love for a man of a different social status, and he blames her...
This Noh play vividly depicts the old man's obsession with love by likening his love to a burden.
