A feudal lord decides to hire a new servant and orders Taro Kaja to find someone suitable.

Now, as the Kaja is out on the road, a man looking for a servant happens to pass by, and the Kaja takes the opportunity to take the man back to the lord. He learns that the man is good at sumo. The lord decides to challenge the man to a sumo match himself to see how good he is, but is defeated miserably. Wanting revenge, the lord reads a book of secrets on sumo given to him by his uncle and tries again...

Matsukaze

In autumn, the moon shines brightly at Suma Bay in Settsu Province. A traveling monk learns that a historic pine tree on the beach is the former site of two diver sisters, Matsukaze and Murasame, and recites sutras to mourn them.

As the sun sets, two divers appear on the beach pulling a cart to collect seawater. The two collect seawater and tearfully reveal that they are the spirits of Matsukaze and Murasame, who were once favored by Ariwara no Yukihira, and ask the monk to clear their delusions of their love for someone of a different social standing.

Soon, Matsukaze embraces the clothes that Yukihira left her as a keepsake, and her feelings for him grow so strong that when she puts on the clothes, she goes crazy, mistaking the pine tree on the beach for Yukihira and running towards him.

As the wind blows wildly through the pine trees and the waves crash violently on the shore, the monk wakes from his dream, and all that remains is the sound of the wind blowing through the pine trees at dawn...

Moonlight, the sound of waves, the sound of the pine wind. This masterpiece Noh play, adapted by Zeami, depicts the passionate love between two sad sisters amidst the various images that intertwine in Suma Bay. Highlights include the poetic scene of the two sisters gathering tide under the moon in the first half and Matsukaze's madness caused by his feelings in the second half.
