Noh play Motomezuka
Early spring in the village of Ikuta, Settsu Province (Hyogo Prefecture). When a traveling monk is asked where the famous Motomezuka is, the women who appear to pick young leaves coldly reply that they don't know and walk away. However, the one woman who remains leads the monk to Motomezuka and tells him its history.
Long ago, there was a woman called Unaiotome in this area. She was courted by two men, Sasadaonoko and Chinunomasurao, and she decided to have them shoot mandarin ducks at the same time, and choose the one who shot the duck most successfully. However, the two arrows hit the same wing, and in the end, unable to choose between them, she regretted having needlessly taken the mandarin duck's life and threw herself into the Ikuta River. Afterwards, the men stabbed each other to death in front of the mound...
Having said this, the woman disappears, asking the monk for help.
When the spirit of the virgin appears at the monk's funeral, she is shown one after another the gruesome scenes of the eight great hells. Otakeda Danshi and Chinuma Tsuyoshi hold the virgin's hand and pull her to the ground, while a terrifying mandarin duck with an iron beak and sword legs butts her head and eats her marrow. She is then chased by the prison guards who are whipping her, and even if she tries to escape, she is faced with the sea in front of her and flames behind her. When she instinctively clings to a pillar, the pillar also suddenly becomes flames and tortures the virgin...
This piece was restored in 1951 by the 6th Kanze Tetsunojō (Kasetsu), and along with "Miyama," which was restored by the 8th Tetsunojō (Shizuyuki), it is a restored Noh piece associated with the Tetsunojō family. The contrast between the carefree scene of young leaves picked in early spring in the first half and the dark and gloomy state of hell in the second half, and the image of a virgin suffering there, leaves a vivid impression on the viewer.
Kyogen Jishaku (Magnetic)
A country bumpkin from Mitsuke Village in Totomi Province (west Shizuoka Prefecture) stops at Matsumoto, Otsu, on his way to the capital. A conman, Suppa (a conman), notices the bumpkin and, pretending to be from the same town, skillfully lures the bumpkin into a teahouse. In reality, the teahouse owner is a human trafficker, and Suppa is planning to sell the bumpkin. The two men have a secret conversation and agree to pay the money the next morning, but the country bumpkin, who has eavesdropped on the conversation, gets there before the money is handed over and escapes with it.
Realizing that he has been outwitted, Suppa chases the country bumpkin in a panic, raising his sword and threatening him. Suddenly, the country boy yells out loud and tries to swallow the sword...
A kyogen piece with a unique concept.
Noh: Stone Bridge, Great Lion (Shakkyo Oojishi)
Oe Sadamoto, who became a monk and changed his name to Jakkyo, crosses the sea with the aim of going to China and heaven. During his journey to visit Buddhist sites, Jakkyo reaches the steep Qingliang Mountain (Shanxi Province, China) and finds a stone bridge barely spanning a hair-raisingly deep valley, about one shaku (about 30 cm) wide and three jo (about 9 m) long.
A mysterious boy appears and tells Jakkyo that on the other side of the bridge is the Pure Land where Manjusri Bodhisattva lives, but that even a famous monk would have difficulty crossing the bridge.
Soon, a lion, a sacred beast serving Manjusri Bodhisattva, appears from the other side of the bridge, and dances and plays heroically among the fragrant red and white peonies in celebration of the eternal spring...
Noh has had an enormous influence on later performing arts such as early modern Japanese music and Kabuki dance, and is a serious Noh performance in which the lion dances and plays among the peony flowers with dynamic movements and intense spirit. This time, the performance will include the first half of the play, in which a child appears, which is usually omitted.
When the kogaki (special production) for "Oshishi" is played, a white and red parent and child lion appear, and each dances and plays solemnly and swiftly, creating a more gorgeous production that emphasizes the celebratory nature of the performance.
