Noh: Zenkai by Kanze Atsuo
Makiginu
An imperial decree was issued throughout the country to offer rolls of silk to Mikumano.
A man carrying rolls of silk from the capital makes a pilgrimage to Otonashi Tenjin Shrine on the way, offering a poem to the deity. Because of this, the man is late on the day the rolls of silk are due to be presented, and is put in a rope for the crime.
A shrine maiden possessed by Otonashi Myojin appears, and, pleased by the man's offering of the poem, forgives his sin of being late and performs a dance of divine possession...
The highlights of this Noh are the unfolding of events in the first half leading up to the man's sin being forgiven, and the shrine maiden's divinely possessed dance in the second half.
The sound of the bell
The master wanted to make a gold-decorated sword to celebrate his son's coming of age, so he called his servant, Taro Kaja, and ordered him to go to Kamakura and ask for the "price of the gold".
However, the Kaja mistook the "price of the gold" for the "sound of the bell" and went around the famous temples of Kamakura, ringing the bells...
Zengai
The Chinese Tengu Zenkaibou travels to Japan to disrupt Japanese Buddhism, and heads for Mount Hiei with the Tengu Tarobou of Mount Atago.
Soon, Zenkaibou flies to Mount Hiei and tempts the monk to the path of evil, but he is finally subdued by the power of Acala and the other gods...
A Noh play depicting the sometimes comical Tengu on a large scale.
