Ancient Joruri: The Biography of Hoin Kochi, by Watanabe Hachidayu
Nishihashi Hachirobei
Noh: Kashiwazaki, by Shimizu Kanji
The Biography of Hoin Kochi, by Yahiko Hirotomo (later known as Hoin Kochi), was born to a wealthy family at the foot of Mt. Yahiko. Despite having a pregnant wife and a young eldest son, he was always indulging in entertainment. His father, Akihiro, visits the pleasure quarters of Kashiwazaki to admonish him, but...
A sekkyo joruri based on the legend of Hoin Kochi, who became a living Buddha. It was performed at the Sekkyoza Theatre in Nihonbashi, Edo, in 1685. In 1963, an illustrated book published in 1685 (the second year of the Jōkyō era) was discovered at the British Museum by Torigoe Bunzō of Waseda University, and the story became known to the world. Donald Keene suggested reviving the play, and it was performed in June 2009 in Kashiwazaki as the kojōri "Echigo no Kuni Kashiwazaki Kōchi Hoin Godenki" by the Echigo Saruhachiza troupe. It was also performed at the British Library in June 2017.
Kashiwazaki
Kashiwazaki. A wife has been waiting for her husband, Lord Kashiwazaki, and their son Hanawaka, who have gone to Kamakura to file a lawsuit, for three years. Then her vassal Kotaro brings her a memento of her husband and news that Hanawaka has retired from the world.
After several days, she arrives at the main hall of Zenkoji Temple. The madwoman ignores the ban on women, dons her husband's keepsake eboshi hat and hitatare, and performs a dance of her heartfelt love to the principal image of Amida Buddha...
In "Sarugaku Dangi after the Heishi Rokuju", it is written that "Kashiwazaki and other pieces were written by Enami no Saemongoro. However, since it has been made without any bad parts and contains only good parts, it must be the work of the heishi. The current Kashiwazaki includes the Noh dance of the earthen cart." Zeami's handwritten copy of Kashiwazaki remains, but there are some differences from the current version.
