TESSENKAI Sponsored Performance
TESSENKAI Regular Performance in January
銕仙会(てっせんかい)主催公演
銕仙会定期公演〈1月〉

overview

Okina (Old Man) - Bunzo Otsuki

Shimai (Shima) - Yashima - Tetsunojo Kanze

Kyogen (Kombukaki) - Man Nomura

Noh (Ema) - Jiichi Asami

Okina (Old Man)

In the solemn and pure air, the dashing Chitose no Tsuyuharai dance, the stately Okina dance, the powerful Moru no Dan and Suzu no Dan dances of Sanbaso are performed one after the other. Said to be "Noh but not Noh," this is a ritual art form that preserves the ancient form of Noh, celebrating and praying for peace throughout the world and bountiful harvests.

Kombu Kaki (Kobugaki)

The peasants of Tanba and Awaji who went to the capital to pay their taxes are asked by the musician (official) to compose auspicious songs that skillfully incorporate the kelp and persimmons of their taxes. The musician is so impressed by their splendor that he exempts them from their taxes, offers them sake, and asks them their names, which they both reveal are strange...

The three dance to the music in this kyogen performance, full of celebration.

Ema (Praying plaque)

An old man holding a white ema and an old woman holding a black ema appear before an imperial envoy visiting Ise Saigū, and they argue over whether to hang a white ema to make the sun shine for farming, or a black ema to bring rain. In the end, the two put on both and pray for a good harvest, revealing themselves to be Amaterasu Omikami and Tsukuyomi no Mikoto, before disappearing.

Soon Amaterasu Omikami appears accompanied by Ame-no-Uzume no Mikoto and Takejikarao no Mikoto, and they recreate the scene of the hiding place in the cave, singing and dancing one after the other.

A waki-noh piece that uses show-like direction to gorgeously depict the divine play of the Age of the Gods, with a celebratory quality.
