overview
Kyogen Buddhist Sculptor Nomura Hiroki
Noh Hakujutsu Kanze Atsuo
Buddhist Sculptor
A country bumpkin goes to the capital to look for a Buddhist sculptor (a craftsman who makes Buddhist statues) to buy a Buddhist statue to place in a temple. As the country bumpkin shouts for the sculptor on the street, Suppa (a conman) calls out to him and promises to make the statue by the next day, and they part ways.
The next day, when the country bumpkin goes to the appointed place, Suppa is wearing a mask and disguised as the Buddha statue. However, the country bumpkin says he doesn't like the Buddha statue's mudra (the shape of the fingers in a mudra), so he calls Suppa and has it remade again and again. Each time, Suppa switches places with the Buddha statue and the sculptor...
Bai Juyi
Bai Juyi, a poet of the Tang dynasty, received an imperial command to evaluate the wisdom of Japan. While observing the state of Japan for a while on the sea of Matsuura lagoon in Hizen Province, a fisherman and a fisherman appear on a boat. When Bai Juyi asks what the Japanese people enjoy, the fisherman tells him that they compose waka poetry. Bai Juyi explains that in the Tang dynasty they recite poetry, and when he composes a Chinese poem about the scenery before his eyes, the fisherman brilliantly translates it into waka poetry. Bai Juyi is surprised, and the fisherman tells him that in Japan, all living things compose poetry, and then disappears.
The fisherman is actually an incarnation of Sumiyoshi Myojin, and when he appears in his original divine form and dances, he advises Bai Juyi to give up on subjugating Japan and return home. Soon, renowned gods from all over the country appeared, played music, danced, and created a divine wind that blew Bai Juyi's ship back to China.
The highlights of this Noh performance are the elegant exchanges over waka poetry in the first act and the majestic dance in the second act.
