Noh Shunkan Shibata Minoru

Kyogen Koshiinori Miyake Ukon

Noh Satsushoseki Kobayakawa Osamu

Shunkan

An envoy for pardon is sent to Naritu, Yasuyori and Shunkan, who were exiled to Kikaigashima Island for plotting to overthrow the Taira clan. They were pardoned because Empress Tokuko (Kenreimon'in) was pregnant.

However, no matter how many times I read it, Shunkan's name is not on the pardon letter. Soon the ship leaves the shore with Naritu and Yasuyori on board. Shunkan watches the ship sail away mercilessly from the beach alone...

A masterpiece of Noh drama that depicts the deep despair, sadness and loneliness of Shunkan, who is left alone on an isolated island in the middle of the ocean.

Koshiinori (Prayer for the Waist)

A mountain ascetic from Mt. Haguro visits his grandfather on his way back from training. Feeling sorry for his grandfather who has a bent back, the mountain ascetic prays by kneading his rosary, hoping to straighten it with his spiritual powers. However, his prayers are too strong and his back becomes so long that it arches backwards...

This is a kyogen play that draws laughs from the mistakes of a novice mountain ascetic.

Sessho-seki (Killing Stone)

When Gen'o Donin visits the plains of Nasuno in Shimotsuke Province, a woman appears before him and tells him the story of the huge stone, the killing stone, which is said to kill anyone who approaches it.

Soon the killing stone cracks, revealing a demonic fox within. The fox demon, who once plagued the imperial court in India and China, became the beautiful Tamamo-no-Mae in Japan and used her mysterious powers to make Emperor Toba sick. However, the fox demon was finally cornered in Nasuno and subdued, turning into a killing stone... This Noh play depicts the legend of the nine-tailed fox, and the highlights are the enchanting and spooky first half and the powerful storytelling in the second half.
