貰聟（もらいむこ）

　酒に酔った勢いで妻と口論になった夫。妻は暇を言い渡され、泣く泣く実家へと帰るが、舅は毎度のことと呆れながらも夫の元へ戻るよう説得する。しかし今度ばかりは娘の決意も固く、舅も仕方なく受け入れる。

　さて、翌日酔いが醒めた夫はばつが悪そうに舅の家を訪ね、妻を戻すよう頼むが舅は聞き入れない。しかし母恋しさに子が泣くと聞いた妻は、それにほだされ、突然帰ると言い出す。先程の覚悟はどうしたと舅も怒り心頭。妻を連れ帰ろうとする夫と取っ組み合いとなり…。

夕顔（ゆうがお）

　都へ上った九州豊後国の僧が五条辺りを訪ねると、近くの家から歌を詠ずる女の声が聞こえてきた。やがて姿を現した女は、ここはかつて融大臣が住み、『源氏物語』にも何某の院と書かれた河原院の旧跡なのだと僧に教える。また夕顔上が落命した場所でもあるのだと言って夕顔上と光源氏の儚い恋物語を詳しく語りはじめる…。

　かつてこの家の軒先には夕顔の花が美しく咲いていた。そしてその花が縁となって源氏と夕顔上は深い契りを交わすことになったのだ。しかしある夜、夕顔上はこの院で突然物怪に襲われて命を落とし、帰らぬ人となってしまった…。そう物語ると女は消え失せてしまう。

　やがて夕顔上の霊が在りし日の姿で現れ、荒れ果てた院の凄まじい景色の中、往時を偲んで舞を舞う…。

　夕顔の花のように儚くその命を散らした夕顔上。その運命と恋心を美しく描いた能。

Married Bride

A husband gets into an argument with his wife while drunk. The wife is dismissed and returns to her parents' house in tears, but her father-in-law, while annoyed that this always happens, persuades her to return to her husband. However, this time his daughter is determined, and the father-in-law has no choice but to accept.

The next day, the husband sobers up and visits his father-in-law's house with a guilty look on his face, begging him to take his wife back, but his father-in-law refuses to listen. However, when the wife hears that her son is crying because he misses his mother, she is moved and suddenly says she is going home. The father-in-law is furious, wondering what happened to his earlier resolve. He gets into a scuffle with the husband who is trying to take his wife home...

Yugao

When a monk from Kyushu's Bungo Province who had traveled to the capital visited the Gojo area, he heard a woman's voice reciting a poem from a nearby house. The woman soon appeared and told the monk that this was the former site of Kawara-in, where Minister Toru once lived and which is also written about as a certain inn in the Tale of Genji. She also said that this was the place where Yugao-no-ue died, and began to recount the fleeting love story between Yugao-no-ue and Hikaru Genji...

Yugao flowers once bloomed beautifully under the eaves of this house. And it was through these flowers that Genji and Yugao-no-ue exchanged a deep vow. However, one night, Yugao-no-ue was suddenly attacked by a spirit at the inn and lost her life, never to return... Having told this story, the woman vanished.

Soon, the spirit of Yugao-no-ue appears as she was in her former self, and in the terrible scenery of the ruined temple, she dances, reminiscing about the past...

Yugao-no-ue's life is as fleeting as that of a Yugao flower. This Noh play beautifully depicts her fate and love.
