Noh Uneme Shimizu Kanji
Mizukakemuko
A farmer in the area notices that there is no water in his own rice field. Looking closer, he sees that all the water is flowing into the neighboring groom's rice field. The father-in-law opens a dam to let the water flow into his own rice field before returning home, but soon the groom also notices that there is no water in his own rice field, so he lets the water flow from the neighboring father-in-law's rice field into his own rice field before returning home.
The next day, the two men meet and get into an argument, and while they are making and cutting ridges to draw water into their own rice fields, the father-in-law gets splashed with water...
Uneme
It is spring. A traveling monk visiting Kasugano in Nara heads for Kasuga Shrine, where a village woman appears to him. The woman guides him to Sarusawa Pond, where she tells him that a court lady (a female attendant to the emperor) who was once the emperor's favorite, was so saddened by the emperor's change of heart that she threw herself into the pond and died. She then reveals that she is in fact that court lady, asks the monk to pray for her soul's soul, and disappears into the pond.
As the monk chants sutras into the night to mourn the court lady, the ghost of the court lady appears, thanking the monk for the prayer.
The monk explains the principle that all plants, trees, and lands can attain buddhahood, and promises that the court lady will attain buddhahood. The court lady then replies that she has already undergone the transformation into a man, and rejoices that she will be able to attain eternal life.
The Uneme dances, thinking back to her glorious past, and disappears once again into the bottom of the pond...
The daughters of local nobles and gifted women who served the emperor, the Uneme women, are depicted in the generous atmosphere of ancient times, depicting their glamorous days at court and the woman who died devoting her love to the emperor.
