Tadanori (Tadano)
A monk related to Fujiwara no Shunzei, who was visiting Suma no Ura, was resting in the shade of a cherry tree when a mysterious old man appeared. The old man recited a poem by Taira no Tadanori to the monk who asked for a place to stay for the night: "If I stay in the shade of the trees at dusk, I will be the master of tonight, like flowers." He said that there was no better place to stay than the shade of the cherry tree, and asked for Tadanori's memorial service before disappearing. In the middle of the night, the spirit of Tadanori appears, and tells him how he was obsessed with the poem he had entrusted to his waka teacher Shunzei during his lifetime, and how after his death, the poet was left unknown because he was an enemy of the court. He shows us his final moments in Ichinotani...
An elegant Shura Noh with an obsession with waka poetry as its theme.
Funefuna (Boat)
The master and Taro Kaja are on a trip. When the master finds a ferry and calls out "Funa-yai," the master tells him that it is called a "fune." The master counters that there is an ancient poem that uses the word "funa," and that it is also called "funa-arrival." The two men argue, arguing that he is right, but the master, having run out of material, recites a poem that uses the word "fune" as a last resort...
Kocho (Butterfly)
A monk from Yoshino visits the capital in early spring and is admiring the plum blossoms in full bloom from the eaves of an old palace when a woman from the village appears and reveals that she is in fact the spirit of a butterfly. She then laments that while she can play with the flowers of spring, summer, and autumn, she has no connection with the plum blossoms of early spring, and disappears. As night falls, the monk recites a sutra and the butterfly spirit appears. The monk expresses his gratitude for the dedication of the deity, and dances joyfully among the plum blossoms under the moonlight... This Noh play was written by Kanze Kojiro Nobumitsu, and is full of elegance and splendor, in contrast to the Noh play "Funa-Benkei," also written by Nobumitsu.
