overview

Kyogen - Magnet - Nomura Mannojo

Noh - Fuji Taiko - Ando Takayasu

Magnet

A country bumpkin from Mitsuke in Totomi Province is on his way to the capital. On the way, as he is visiting the market in Matsumoto, Otsu, Suppa passes by and approaches the country bumpkin with his smooth talk. The two decide to travel together and rest at an inn, where it turns out that the owner is actually a human trafficker. The country bumpkin overhears the two discussing a deal to buy and sell him, and gets there before the money is exchanged, successfully stealing it and running away.

Realizing this, Suppa frantically chases after the country bumpkin. When Suppa raises his sword to threaten him, the country bumpkin suddenly shouts out and tries to swallow the sword...

Fuji Taiko

A seven-day music concert was to be held at the Imperial Palace, and a Tennoji musician and master of the taiko drums, Asama, was called in. However, later, a man named Fuji, also a master of the taiko drums from Sumiyoshi, volunteered to play the same role and came to Kyoto. Asama, unable to forgive Fuji's behavior and filled with resentment, killed Fuji.

Meanwhile, Fuji's wife, who had an ominous dream, worries about her husband's safety and goes to the capital with her child. However, she is cruelly informed of her husband's death and receives a dance costume as a keepsake. She regrets not being able to stop her husband, who had high hopes, and mourns his death. When she puts on the costume, she gradually becomes insane, and, staring at the taiko drums, attacks her husband's enemies...

With her grudge cleared, the wife beats the drums for Senshuraku and Taiheiraku, strips off her costume, and says that the drums were a keepsake of her husband, before returning to her hometown with her child.

The intense love she feels for her husband, including insanity, gradually builds up towards a climax in this magnificent piece of Kyoku-Noh.
