overview

Noh: Kamo by Katayama Kuroemon

Kyogen: Kanko by Nomura Mansaku

Noh: Funabashi by Nagayama Keizo

Kamo

A priest visiting Shimogamo Shrine in early summer meets a village girl drawing water from the Mitarai River, and hears the story of a white-feathered arrow placed on an altar covered with white cotton. The woman is actually an incarnation of the god of her ancestors, and when she reveals her true form and dances, the god of thunder also appears with the wind and rain, foretelling the harvest and promising to protect the land.

This waki-noh piece is notable for the contrast between the images of water, the clarity and beauty of the clear stream in the first half and the ferocity of the thunderstorm in the second half.

Koji (Tangerine)

Tarokaja is asked by his master to return the three ripe tangerines (three fruited mandarins) he left with him last night. He confesses that he has eaten two of them, but says that the remaining one has a sad story to tell, and begins the story of Shunkan, who was left alone on Kikaigashima Island...

The highlights of this kyogen are the narrator's narration and witty excuses.

Funabashi (Boat Bridge)

In Sano, Kozuke Province, there used to be a man and woman who would meet frequently on a boat bridge built over a river as a love route. However, their parents, who were not happy about this, removed the planks of the bridge, and the man fell into the river and died.

Soon the ghosts of the man and woman appear, and they reenact the man's nightly journey across the bridge to visit the woman...

This Noh play depicts the tragic love between a man and a woman, based on a poem from the Manyoshu.
