"Over the Silver-lining" is a musical stage play that has been performed all over Japan for 25 years. The original work is the radio drama "Contrail" (produced by FM Kagoshima in 1999) by screenwriter Fumiko Kusakabe. It won the 38th Galaxy Award Encouragement Award, and has since been remade by TBS Radio, FM Yokohama, and other local stations. Since its premiere in 2000, the play has been performed all over Japan, with a total audience of over 100,000.
The play continues to be performed by Ateliage, a small Tokyo theater company led by the author Namiki, but a national executive committee has been established and the play is currently performed nationwide from Hokkaido to Okinawa, attracting a wide range of audiences of over 10,000 people a year. Last year's Tokyo main performance was at the Mitsukoshi Theater in Nihonbashi. It was a great success, with the theater full every day.
In addition, the English version of "Flowing Clouds" by the overseas tour team Samurai Rising, "Over the Silver-lining," was highly praised with a standing ovation at the Kennedy Center in New York in 2019, and its performance at the AKIRU Theater in Dubai in 2023 was highly praised by members of the royal family and was a great success.
This work is neither nostalgic nor a loud anti-war appeal. It is a vivid story of the lives of young people who risked their lives to protect what is important to them, and is a work that depicts Japanese humanism. 79 years have passed since the end of the war. Japan has the dishonorable title of being the number one country in the world for suicides among developed countries... Would our ancestors who lost their lives in the war have wanted Japan to be what it is today? I believe that it is time for us to think again about how we should live in the present.
In order to connect the message of love from the past to the future, "Flowing Clouds" will continue to be performed not only in Japan but also around the world.
We will pass the baton so that it will become one of Japan's representative works in 100 years' time.
