Gros cute cannibalism World pop
Natasha Tontei has been attracting attention for her performance works in recent years while working as a visual artist based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This project, which started in 2017, dyes the act of "eating" necessary for human life into a pop and groovy cute Tontei world, and various problems that modern society has such as global warming and overconsumption. It invites you to see what you see.
An exhibition space where a dinner table composed of dishes with shapes and colors that imitate the human body is placed. This work is a newly shot work that you can appreciate the video in the space with the addition of the video of Tontei and the performer who enjoy the food. The act of eating by Tontei and the performer also leads to cannibalism, which is regarded as socially taboo, and reveals how eating = living is dominated by social fear and anxiety. At the same time, the concept of cannibalism has a history that has been represented by the dynamics of the colonial era, and it cannot be said that it has escaped from that gaze even today. It also hides an ironical perspective that superimposes people who can only survive by consuming (= eating) their own bodies in an over-consuming society that leads to global warming.
At the screening, you can fully enjoy the images created for the presentation in Kyoto in the exhibition space with a theatrical arrangement called a performative dinner. What kind of experience will the appreciation while looking at the special menu bring? stay tuned!
